FLAPPERHOUSE Reading #13, in Pictures

A million savage hugs to everyone who helped make last night’s reading such a vicious joy: Eric, Anthony, Mary Boo, Sylvia, Monica, Lonnie, and Bill for performing your flappy work; Alibi for your exquisite singing and photography; Pacific Standard for your most generous hospitality; and all you beautiful, charming folks who came to watch. Let’s do this again on March 22…

“evermore” is one of two edgy & profound poems by Lonnie Monka in our Fall 2016 issue.

PRAYING FOR LIGHT
while pooping in the dark outside
                                 a car approaches
people often anger
in an inverse proportion to their true faith
& faith can’t help
               but support absolutely everything
just as G-d’s footprint must be too big to see
              realists don’t think
they are just sub-conscious statisticians
              trying to be helpful
so what is eternity without thinking beings
              forever trying to understand
the end of time
                 the bottom of the sea
                                  no toilet paper?

“Waning & Waiting” and “Erotics of Silence” – Poetry by Lonnie Monka

Gun - Andy Warhol, 1981
Guns – Andy Warhol, 1981

Lonnie Monka‘s poems “Waning & Waiting” and “Erotics of Silence”, included in our Summer 2014 issue, are very brief but very powerful, so without further ado:

“Waning & Waiting”

BULLETS WHIZ
        past people’s ears
every day
      on city streets;
I have shot
      the same gun
others have used
      for suicide.

The stop signs have
      no gun holes here,
the sun is blocked
      from flirting strands
of light, flickering
      with the rising
& the setting
      of lust-filled days:—
Maybe tomorrow
      I’ll find her,
perhaps I will pull
      hard on her hair.

Every day
      I wake up
a blinded bird
      that craves to fly:
Who can resist
      the savage pleasure
of pushing hard
      against the air?

“Erotics of Silence”

IF ONLY—OH! IF ONLY THE BURNING,
scorching bits
of I-don’t-know-what
would stop.
